Stanford Women Tied For Second After First Day Of Pac-10 Championships

Pac-10 Championships Day One Results

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Top-ranked Stanford women's swimming finished Wednesday's first day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships in a tie for second place following a pair of relay events.

Stanford and USC ended the day with 110 points apiece, trailing California, which won both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay to gain 128 points.

UCLA held fourth place with 102 points, followed by Washington State and Oregon State with 94 points each, Arizona (52) and Arizona State (48).

The Cardinal foursome of Betsy Webb, Liz Smith, Felicia Lee and Sam Woodward opened the competition with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, touching the wall in a final time of 1:38.61, which was 2.99 seconds behind the winning quartet from California.

Stanford's "B" foursome of Megan Fischer-Colbrie, Kerry Kraemer, Jessie Hammes and Alex Whitford turned in the ninth-best time of the competition, 1:40.78.

The day closed with the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Stanford's quartet of Andi Murez, Maya DiRado, Andie Taylor and Kate Dwelley picked up a second-place finish with a time of 7:02.19. That time was 1.44 seconds behind the winning time of 7:00.75 clocked by California.

Pac-10 Championships action will continue in Federal Way, Wash. Thursday, with the day's ledger set to decide the individual champions of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 1-meter diving finals.
