Staab Another Title, Cardinal in Third at NCAAs

March 25, 2011

MINNEAPOLIS-- Austin Staab won his second NCAA title in as many days as Stanford is in third  place with one day to go at the NCAA Championships.

Cal is a day away from sweeping both the men's and women's titles, leading with 352 points, while Texas is second (288.5), followed by Stanford (278.5), Arizona (214) and Florida (213).

Staab won his third career title, leading the pack in the 100 fly with a mark of 44.69, well ahead of second place and 2010 champion, Tom Shields of Cal and his time of 45.57. Bobby Bollier was sixth with a mark of 45.92, .07 seconds slower than his prelim time. It was Staab's second national title in a row in the 100 fly and first since 2009.

It was the second A Final for the versatile, Bollier, who was a national runner-up in the 500 free on day one.

The Cardinal closed out the second day fourth in the 800 free relay (6:19.13).

Stanford had three swimmers in the top-16 in the 200 free with Morgan Priestley finishing eighth in the A Finals and Alex Coville and Jake Allen finishing 12th and 13th. The Cardinal added two more in the 100 breast with Curtis Lovelace finishing fifth (52.97).

The championships finish off in the Twin Cities on Saturday. Finals will be carried on ESPN3.com.

NOTES: Bollier's prelim time of 44.85 was the third-fastest in school history... Staab's win the 100 fly was Stanford's ninth. It was the fifth fastest in NCAA history with Staab's 2009 mark of 44.18, still an NCAA and American record... in the, you don't see that every day, the national anthem was played on a trumpet on the diving platform before the player jumped in... under Goldman Family Director of Swimming Skip Kenney, the Cardinal has finished fourth or better at every championship since 1981.

Winners and Stanford All-Americans (or best finisher outside top-16)
