STANFORD, Calif.-- Kyle Simon (10-3) and the No. 27-ranked Arizona (33-18, 12-11 Pac-10) evened its three-game series, as the Wildcat righthander struck out four and scattered eight hits in a 7-3 win on Saturday over No. 25-ranked Stanford (29-19, 11-12 Pac-10).
Simon left after five consecutive Cardinal reached base in the eighth, cutting the Arizona lead to 7-3 with two runs. Simon had pitched five scoreless innings, before getting in trouble following 7.1 innings.
Reliever Matt Chaffee picked up his seventh save, with a strikeout and groundout to leave the bases loaded in the eighth, before finishing off the game with a perfect ninth.
Simon allowed a Tyler Gaffney sacrifice fly in the sixth and RBIs from Stepehn Piscotty and Austin Wilson in the eighth.
An RBI double from Bobby Rinard followed by an RBI single by Alex Mejia gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the fifth, the first runs in the series for the Wildcats. Robert Refsnyder's single to start the fifth was the first Wildcat hit of the game and broke up a string of seven in a row retired by loser Danny Sandbrink (3-1).
Josh Garcia then hit a two-run home run in the sixth to make it a 4-0 lead as Sandbrink went the first six innings, giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Sandbrink had pitched to one over the minimum over the first four innings, before the two runs on four hits in the fifth.
Scott Snodgress and A.J. Vanegas gave up two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to make it 7-1.
NOTES: Tyler Gaffney's bunt single in the eighth extended his hit streak to 13 games... Danny Diekroeger entered the game at second base in the ninth, making it the first time in Stanford history that shortstop, Kenny, a sophomore, and Danny, a freshman, played together in the field... Arizona second baseman Bryce Ortega robbed Stephen Piscotty of a base hit up the middle, diving and making the play in the fourth. Ortega then robbed Brett Michael Doran and Kenny Diekroeger of a hits in the seventh, both on balls headed up the middle… the Sunday finale is at 1 p.m.... Stanford closes out the home regular season on Tuesday against Cal Poly at 5:30 p.m... Stanford plays at Cal on May 27 and 28... seniors Dave Giuliani, Ben Clowe, Danny Sandbrink and Zach Jones were honored prior to first pitch.
