STANFORD, Calif.-- A fielding error by second baseman Willy Reel with two outs in the ninth, led No. 28-ranked Stanford (24-16, 8-9 Pac-10) to an 8-7 win over visiting Washington (13-29, 4-13 Pac-10) on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinal, which rapped out 19 singles, picked a nice time for its first extra and final base hit of the afternoon.
Zach Jones doubled to start the ninth against Adam Cimber (2-3), moved to third on Tyler Gaffney's fly out to center, and then waited. Stephen Piscotty was intentionally walked, Kenny Diekroeger, who had three hits, struck out and Brian Ragira, who had five hits, was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Dave Giuliani then hit an 0-2 pitch right to Reel, whose pinch-hit groundout in the eighth, capped a four-run inning and tied the game at 7-7.
Chris Reed (3-2), who had given away the 7-3 lead in the eighth, got the win, as UW started the eighth with five-straight hits. A two-run single by Ryan Wiggins brought the Huskies to within 7-6, before a sacrifice bunt and Reel's pinch-hit ground out tied it at 7-7.
Reed allowed a leadoff single and steal in the ninth, put kept it scoreless, as Stanford rallied for its third win in its final at-bat of the season.
Danny Sandbrink and the Cardinal were cruising through seven, as the righthander left with a 7-3 lead after six hits and six strikeouts. Stanford built its lead with two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
The Huskies used three pitchers to get into the eighth, after starter Aaron West went the first 3.2 innings, giving up a single run with six strikeouts and Jacob Clem gave up four runs in his two innings of work. Tyler Kane allowed two runs in the seventh.
NOTES: Sunday's finale is at noon with games at Pacific on Monday at 6 p.m and a by playing host to UC Davis on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m... it was Reed's second blown save of the year... Stanford still has not played an extra inning game... the 20 hits were a season-high.
