STANFORD, Calif.-- Kenny Diekroeger went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI single as No. 8-ranked Stanford (3-1) defeated No. 17-ranked Cal in a non-conference top-25 showdown, 3-2 on Tuesday evening.

Jordan Pries (1-0) went a pre-determined 4.0 innings for the win, giving up a single hit to Tony Renda in the first, while striking out four. He retired the final seven Bears he faced and left it to the bullpen following a 3-0 lead.

A.J. Vanegas, followed by Scott Snodgress did not allow a run over the final four innings. Vanegas retired the final seven Bears he faced after giving up two runs in the fifth, before Snodgress struck out Chadd Krist with two runners on in the eighth and then picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

Cal got back into the contest by scoring twice off of Vanegas in the fifth to close to within 3-2. In his first collegiate outing, the freshman gave up three straight, one-out singles and two runs as Cal closed to within 3-2 in the fifth. Vanegas gave up just those two runs on four hits over 3.0 innings.

Diekroeger's first home run of the season, a solo shot in the second, made it 1-0. Diekroeger added to the lead in a two-run third, with an RBI single to make it 3-0 following a run-scoring infield single by Tyler Gaffney.

Dixon Anderson (0-1) went 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts in his first Cal start of the year.

NOTES: Stanford Baseball announced on Tuesday that lefthander Brett Mooneyham had season-ending finger surgery and will be out for the season. The junior and two-year weekend starter cut his left middle finger in January and had surgery last week. Mooneyham is 9-10 with a 4.67 ERA over 28 career starts. He was a member of Team USA this past summer and also pitched in Yarmouth-Dennis of the Cape Cod League.... Zach Jones threw out two runners on the base paths tonight.... Stanford heads to Vanderbilt this weekend. Vandy is ranked No. 3 nationally and is 4-0 on the season prior to playing Belmont on Wednesday... Diekroeger and Jake Stewart continued modest four-game hit streaks to start the season.
