Stanford Drops MPSF Contest at Denver

April 7, 2012

Final Stats

DENVER, Colo - Stanford fell to 1-1 in conference and 3-8 overall with a 1212 loss at Denver on Saturday. Stanford fell behind early and could not mount the comeback to overcome the Pioneers who improved to 3-0 in conference and 9-1 overall.

Stanford fell behind 6-0 in the first half as Denver came out with an offensive onslaught. The Pioneers used five different goal scorers to build the lead in the first 13:46 of the half.

Stanford eventually got on the board at the 15:56 mark of the half when Maria Fortino found Emilie Boeri for a goal. Boeri added a second goal on a free-position shot and then assisted on a Emily Newstrom goal as the Cardinal fought back to make it 6-3.

Denver was not done, however, scoring twice more before the half and took an 8-4 lead to the break as Stanford also got a late goal from Hannah Farr. Denver outshot the Cardinal 17-9 in the period, but Lyndsey Munoz kept things close with six first-half saves.

Stanford played better in the second half, but could not overcome the lead. Stanford pulled to within three a couple times, but could get no closer. Boeri added a third goal for the hat trick, while Newstrom also scored for a second time. The other goal scorers were Fortino, Kyle Fraser and Catherine Swanson.

The Cardinal actually won 13 of 23 draw controls, but turned the ball over 25 times to give Denver the possession advantage. Munoz was sensational in net, making 15 saves, but it was not enough.

The Cardinal will now return home after over a month without a game at Cagan. Stanford faces Oregon on Friday, April 13, at 7pm and San Diego State on Sunday, April 15, at 1pm.
