STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford is headed to the NCAA tournament in women's water polo, among many highlights involving Cardinal teams.
Baseball
No. 9-ranked Stanford (28-11) won a key series at No. 10-ranked UCLA, bookending the series with identical 7-2 victories on Friday and Sunday. In the opener, top starter Mark Appel (6-1) struck out 10 for the fifth time this season – and fourth against a top-10 opponent. Stephen Piscotty provided the offense with a three-run homer. On Saturday, UCLA evened the series as Brett Mooneyham (5-4) lost for the fourth time in five starts, with the Bruins holding on for the 7-4 victory. The Cardinal loaded the bases in the ninth but could not score against closer Scott Griggs. On Sunday, after UCLA took a 2-0 lead after the first two frames, the Cardinal rallied with a two-out, six-run rally in the fifth to ultimately win the series. Stanford sent eight men to the plate with two out. Sahil Bloom, who pitched two innings on Friday, pitched the final five scoreless innings on Sunday for the win. Record: 28-12 overall, 10-8 Pac-12. Rankings: No. 7 (USA Today), No. 12 (Baseball America).
Football
Several Stanford players were signed as free agents following the NFL Draft last week. Four Stanford players were drafted: Andrew Luck (first overall; Indianapolis), David DeCastro (24th overall; Pittsburgh), Coby Fleener (34th overall; Indianapolis) and Jonathan Martin (42nd overall; Miami). Among the undrafted signees were defensive end Matt Masifilo, wide receiver Chris Owusu and defensive back Michael Thomas with the San Francisco 49ers, where they will be reunited with former Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. Wide receiver Griff Whalen will join Luck and Fleener in Indianapolis. Defensive back Delano Howell signed with the Buffalo Bills, and Johnson Bademosi and Jeremy Stewart are expected to sign with Cleveland and Philadelphia, respectively.
Season tickets are on sale, which is the only guarantee for tickets for the USC showdown against Matt Barkley and company. Last season, six of seven home games were sold out. This year, Stanford has six home games, beginning with the season opener Sept. 1 against San Jose State. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office at the main entrance to Stanford Stadium, online through gostanford.com, and by phone at 1-800-STANFORD.
Men’s Golf
Andrew Yun became the first Stanford golfer to earn medalist honors at the Pac-12 Championships since 2002, when Jim Seki won the individual title on the same Trysting Tree Golf Club layout in Corvallis, Ore. Yun’s 13-under par total included 22 birdies and an eagle over his 72 holes. The victory was the second of his career, after capturing The Prestige at PGA West as a sophomore. Just how consistent has Yun been over the last two seasons for the Cardinal? The junior from Chandler, Ariz., has finished in the top-10 in 13 of Stanford’s 21 events dating back to last season, including 11 top-five finishes. Stanford Golf Course will play host to the NCAA West Regional, May 17-19. The field will be announced on Monday. Ranking: No. 8 (Golfweek).
Women’s Golf
If Stanford is to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Franklin, Tenn., the Cardinal will have to finish in the top eight of the NCAA West Regional next week at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. Stanford is seeded 14th in the 22-team field, which features four top-10 teams, including top-ranked UCLA, No. 6 LSU, No. 7 North Carolina and No. 9 California. Stanford is coming off a seventh place at the Pac-12 Championships in Pullman, Wash. Sally Watson and Mariko Tumangan tied for 12th place and both players earned honorable mention all-conference honors earlier this week. Watson player her last 36 holes at five-under par after an opening-round 83. Rankings: No. 38 (Golfweek).
Women’s Lacrosse
The Cardinal’s streak of seven consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament titles came to an end Sunday when Oregon defeated Stanford in the final, 13-10. Still, it was a strong season for a pair of Cardinal seniors. Emilie Boeri scored 40 goals and had 23 assists for 63 points, good for No. 3 on the school season scoring list. The 23 assists are No. 4 all-time, and her 40 goals are tied for No. 10. Catherine Swanson tied the school season record for draw controls with 52. She ties former teammate Leslie Foard, who set the mark last season. Boeri and Swanson were first-team All-MPSF picks. Record: 8-10. Ranking: Unranked.
Rowing
The Stanford men won one of four races against Cal at The Big Row on Saturday at Redwood Shores, but the Cardinal women lost all four to the top-ranked Golden Bears. Next up for both Stanford teams is the Pac-12 Championships in Gold River, Calif., on May 13. Women's Ranking: No. 12 (CRCA).
Sailing
Stanford completed a league first over the weekend, winning all six Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference titles -- the men’s and women’s singlehanded, and match racing in the fall, and the coed, three-boat team and women's regattas in the spring. The Cardinal’s latest triumph was the coed championships in Santa Barbara, where Oliver Toole won five of six races. Stanford which ranks in the top-six nationally in all three national polls, have garnered 10 of a possible 18 all-conference slots after Monday's announcement of seven all-conference male skippers and coed crews. All 10 are underclassmen. The coed sailors are next headed to Annapolis, Md., for the national semifinals, where a top-nine finish will send them to the national championships in Lake Travis, Texas. The women's team already has qualified. Women's ranking: No. 3. Coed ranking: No. 4 (Sailing World).
Women’s Soccer
Former Stanford star Ali Riley and her New Zealand national team beat visiting Papua New Guinea, 8-0 on March 31 and then won in Port Moseby, 7-0, on the April 4 second leg to win the Oceania Olympic Qualifying final, 15-0, on aggregate goals. New Zealand will play Great Britain (July 25) and Brazil (July 28) in Cardiff, Wales, in first-round group play during the London Games.
Softball
This weekend's Pac-12 series against Washington marks the final regular season home games for Stanford's three seniors - Jenna Becerra, Maya Burns and Ashley Hansen. The trio has won 159 games and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals in two of their first three years on The Farm. They were a part of the 2009 squad which posted the best winning percentage in school history (.814). Records: 33-16 overall, 6-12 Pac-12. Ranking: No. 19 (USA Today).
Synchronized Swimming
Stanford's Maria Koroleva will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She will be partner with Mary Killman in the duet competition. The pair first swam together at the Pan American games in October 2011, bringing home the silver medal.
Men’s Tennis
Matches like Thursday’s Pac-12 Championships quarterfinal victory against Utah may serve Stanford well in the postseason. A 4-2 victory over Utah won’t garner any extra attention, but the Cardinal can draw from its experience of grinding out a tough match despite adverse conditions and outside factors. Originally scheduled to start at 2 p.m., the match was pushed back an hour after rain had altered play early in the day. Another rain delay, coupled with a marathon-like first match to open the day between California and Washington, translated into a 7:50 p.m. start time for Stanford and Utah. Daniel Ho eventually clinched Stanford’s victory at 11:30 p.m. with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 victory on Court Five. Record: 17-8. Ranking: No. 10 (ITA).
Women’s Tennis
Nicole Gibbs collected her second career singles title over the weekend, defeating California's Anett Schutting, 6-0, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon in the final at the Pac-12 Championships. Seeded No. 1 in the draw and ranked No. 3 in the nation, Gibbs became the second consecutive Stanford player to claim the singles title, following Kristie Ahn in 2011. There also was a possibility that Gibbs, who claimed the ITA Northwest Regional Championships singles crown in October, could become the first Stanford player to capture both conference singles and doubles titles since Marissa Irvin in 1999. However, Gibbs and partner Mallory Burdette dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria in the doubles final. Record: 18-1. Ranking: No. 5 (ITA).
Men’s Track and Field
Much was made of Chris Derrick’s American Collegiate Record of 27:31.38 at the Payton Jordan Invitational. But how does he stack up against the post-collegiates he will face at the U.S. Olympic Trials? Only Galen Rupp, Chris Solinsky, Matt Tegenkamp, Tim Nelson and Bobby Curtis have run faster than Derrick in the past two years. Rupp is the unquestioned favorite at the Trials, while Solinsky is the only other American to have broken 27 minutes, doing at the 2010 Payton Jordan Invitational. However, he is recovering from injury and his fitness is a mystery. Nelson and Curtis have been consistently in the 27:30 range, while Tegenkamp is expected to run the 5,000 at the Trials. Of course, Derrick also has the ‘A’ Standard in the 5,000 meters, and could switch to that distance as well. Ranking: No. 19 (USTFCCCA).
Women’s Track and Field
Katie Nelms had a big weekend of personal bests. First, she competed at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Saturday, running the 100 and 200 meters. Nelms ran 11.60 in the 100, which ranks 10th all-time at Stanford, and 23.48 in the 200, which is seventh all-time for the Cardinal. Sunday, Nelms ran her best event, the 100-meter hurdles, defeating teammate Kori Carter to win in 13.24. The time was another personal best and second all-time at Stanford, just shy of Carter’s record of 13.13. Ranking: No. 12 (USTFCCCA).
Men’s Volleyball
Stanford’s five-set loss to UC Irvine on Saturday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament final closed the books on Stanford career records for these seniors:
• Brad Lawson completed his career with 1,828 kills, and 128 service aces. Each total is the most in the rally-scoring era.
• Gus Ellis finished with 392 blocks, another rally-scoring era record, and matched the career mark of 1.10 blocks per set by Paul Bocage (2001-03).
• Erik Shoji finished with 1,402 digs, a Stanford all-era record and the most in NCAA history. He also broke the all-era career mark for digs per set, with 3.16, breaking the mark of 2.67 by David Vogel (2002-05). Record: 22-7. Ranking: No. 3 (AVCA).
Women’s Water Polo
Despite having its 37-game home winning streak snapped by UCLA, 8-7, in the MPSF tournament final, Stanford received the No. 1 seed into the NCAA Championships, to be held May 11-13 in San Diego. The Cardinal (23-2) earned one of two at-large bids into the eight-team field and will aim for a repeat title beginning with a first-round game against No. 8 seed and SCIAC champion Pomona-Pitzer (21-16). Record: 23-2. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
