STANFORD, Calif. – In nonconference action, the Stanford men’s volleyball team defeated Hope International University (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16), Saturday, in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal moves to 5-10 overall, while the Royals fall to 10-9.
All 15 Cardinal players who suited up took the court on Saturday. As a team, Stanford hit a season high .356 while holding Hope to a .208 clip.
“It was a good team effort tonight,” said ninth-year head coach John Kosty. “I liked how we responded after game three. I thought we picked up the intensity and refocused again. I like how we started to figure things out.
“Conrad [Kaminski] had a nice match and Kevin [Rakestraw] did as well. You know, all of our middles played well tonight.”
Junior middle blocker Conrad Kaminski went 8-0-12 to hit .667, while also recording three blocks and an ace in three sets. Redshirt freshman Kevin Rakestraw also played in three sets, totaling seven kills on nine swings with no errors to hit .778. He also collected five blocks, including two solo.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Gabriel Vega and junior opposite Alex Stephanus led the team with nine kills and three digs apiece. Fifth-year senior Daniel Tublin added seven kills on a .545 attack percentage, while senior middle Spencer Haly had five kills on six errorless swings.
Freshman Kyle Dagostino and senior Sean Kemper shared time at setter in each of the four sets. Dagostino finished with 35 assists and a match-high nine digs. Kemper tallied a career high 11 assists and two blocks.
“We had the ability to get some guys in there in some roles, and I thought all of them did a really nice job,” explained Kosty. “From the service line, to Sean Kemper coming in and setting the offense, it was really nice.”
Senior Matt Aiello made his season debut, entering as a serving sub in the first set and registering an ace. Redshirt freshman Clay Jones chipped in with four kills, three digs and two blocks in two sets.
“I like our situation right now. We are starting to play well. We are back at home and we are getting into a good groove. I think the wins are going to start coming. We just need to keep improving and continue to play better volleyball.”
Stanford remains on The Farm next week, playing host to No. 6 Pepperdine on Friday, Feb. 27. The Cardinal and Waves will square off at 5 p.m. in Maples Pavilion on the Pac-12 Networks.
