Weather Forces Meet Restart

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Lightning and more than four inches of rain forced the postponement of the opening day of the NCAA West Track and Field Preliminary meet Thursday at Rock Chalk Park.

The men's hammer throw and women's javelin were the only two events to get underway before weather delays halted action. Meet officials suspended all events for the meet until Friday morning.

Stanford, which has 42 individuals and two relay teams, will have to condense what was supposed to be three days of competition into two, Friday and Saturday.

The women's 10,000 meters will begin Friday’s action, at 6 a.m. PT (8 a.m. CT). The men's 10,000 will follow at 6:40 a.m. Events originally scheduled for Thursday will be contested beginning with the women's 100 meter quarterfinal at 7:20 a.m. PT.

All running events will be run in a single round for the remainder of the meet. The heat winners of the 100, 200, 400 and 800, as well as the 100/110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, plus the next six fastest times will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 8-11. The top two in each heat of the 1,500 meter races and the next four fastest overall also will advance. All other running events advance by original procedure.

The men's pole vault, originally scheduled for Thursday, will be moved indoors to Anschutz Pavilion. The event is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. PT. The women's pole vault and the men's and women's high jumps will also be held indoors.
