STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's captains are still teammates. Drew Skundrich is joining Tomas Hilliard-Arce in Los Angeles after the LA Galaxy took the Cardinal midfielder with the 17th pick in the second round (40th overall) at the 2018 MLS SuperDraft on Friday afternoon.
It's the sixth time Stanford has had multiple players taken in the SuperDraft and second in the last three years. The Cardinal had three selected in 2001, four in 2002, four in 2003, two in 2004 and three in 2016. Skundrich is the 24th Stanford men's soccer player to hear his name called in the draft and seventh under head coach Jeremy Gunn.
Skundrich, a versatile, two-time team captain, was the midfield engine behind Stanford's championship dominance and had career highs in goals (5) and assists (5) as a senior in being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Best XI second team. He finished his career with nine goals and 13 assists.
After starting all 23 games at right back during Stanford's 2015 championship run, Skundrich moved to the central midfield and started every match in the 2016 and 2017 title campaigns. He earned spots this year on the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region first team and All-Pac-12 first team.
At Stanford, Skundrich led the Cardinal to three consecutive national championships, four Pac-12 titles and a 65-10-13 overall record (.813).
