HONOLULU, HI – Stanford dropped its first two matches of the Rainbow Wahine Classic Saturday in a 5-0 defeat to No. 3 UCLA and a 4-1 loss to No. 5 Hawai'i.
"We came to Oahu to play two great teams in Hawai'i and UCLA," said second-year head coach Andrew Fuller. "We are thrilled about the learning that's occurring as a result of the strong competition."
Against the Bruins, the Cardinal's No. 5 pairing of Kat Anderson and Caitlin Keefe rallied late in the first set, but dropped the match, 21-17, 21-12.
The Bruins would go on to clinch the match with consecutive wins in the Nos. 3 and 4 matches. No. 3 Catherine Raquel and Payton Chang dropped a two-setter, 21-16, 21-17. In the No. 4 match, Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico lost a two-set decision to UCLA's pair of Megan Muret and Izzy Carey.
In the second match of the day, No. 17 Stanford (0-1, 0-1 Pac-12) fell to No. 5 Hawai'i 4-1.
No. 4 Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico forced the Cardinal's first three-set match of the day after overcoming a 21-15 first set loss to earn a 23-21 second set win. They went on to win the third set 16-14, securing a point for Stanford.
Hawai'i then took the final three matches of the day in the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 1 pairings, securing the 4-1 victory.
"We are excited to take some information forward into tomorrow and become a more seasoned team, added Fuller.
The Cardinal continue the Rainbow Wahine Classic Sunday, facing No. 3 UCLA at 12 p.m. PT and No. 5Hawai'i at 6 p.m. PT.
