Thirty-Eight to NCAA West

Fifth-year senior distance runners Tom Coyle, Sam Wharton, Sean McGorty and Jack Keelan all advanced.

STANFORD, Calif. -- Thirty-eight Stanford track and field athletes – 23 women and 15 men plus three relays -- have qualified for the NCAA West Prelims, the meet that determines the NCAA Championships field.

The West regional, in Sacramento, on May 24-26, is one of two in the country, along with another in Tampa, Florida. Athletes qualified by achieving the top 48 marks from each half of the country. The exceptions are the relays, in which 24 teams advanced.

The fields were completed Thursday, though medical scratches are being accepted through Monday.

The top 12 in each event advance to the NCAA Championships, creating a 24-participant field. The top eight relay placers in each regional advance. The top 24 decathletes – including Stanford's Harrison Williams -- and heptathletes across the nation have advanced directly to the NCAA Championships, June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.

Stanford has 16 top-12 seeds. For the men: Grant Fisher (No. 4, 5,000 meters), Sean McGorty (No. 12, 5,000), and the 4x400 relay team (No. 9). For the women: Mackenzie Little (No. 1, javelin), Christina Aragon (No. 2, 1,500), Vanessa Fraser (No. 2, 5,000), Lena Giger (No. 2, shot put), Valarie Allman (No. 4, discus), Elise Cranny (No. 5, 1,500), Jenna Gray (No. 6, javelin), Olivia Baker (No. 7, 800), Fiona O;Keeffe (No. 7, 5,000), Kaitlyn Merritt (No. 7, pole vault), Abbie McNulty (No. 11, 10,000), Erika Malaspina (No. 12, pole vault), and the 4x400 relay team (No. 5).

The Stanford women will feature six freshmen qualifiers: Ashlan Best (200, 400), Carolyn Wilson (400), Julia Heymach (1,500), Jordan Oakes (3,000 steeplechase), Jessica Lawson (1,500, 5,000), and Virginia Miller (javelin).

The most representatives in any event for Stanford is in the women's 1,500, with Aragon, Cranny, No. 20 Maddy Berkson, No. 24 Heymach, and No. 29 Lawson. There are four in the women's 5,000 and three each in the men's 5,000 and women's javelin.

Stanford's first-time qualifiers also include: freshman Gabriel Navarro (men's 100), redshirt freshman Hari Sathyamurthy (men's 800), redshirt junior Christian White (men's 800), redshirt freshman Will Kingsfield (men's javelin) and sophomore Erika Malaspina (women's pole vault).
