TEMPE, Az. – Stanford posted season-bests on the uneven bars and floor exercise, but host Arizona State pulled away in the final event on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The No. 19 Sun Devils responded with their highest point total of the season in the 196.375-195.000 win against the No. 24 Cardinal in a close meet settled in the final rotation. Arizona State pulled away on floor while Stanford struggled on beam.
"The gymnastics is getting stronger which shines through in our season highs, but our mental toughness is not where it needs to be," said head coach Tabitha Yim. "We will continue to focus on our culture and learning lessons that will help us build the character we need to handle big moments."

Despite the loss, the young Cardinal team continues to make progress. Stanford led after the first event by scoring 49.050 on bars, as sophomore Kyla Bryant finished second (9.900) and freshman Grace Waguespack tied for third (9.875), tallying a career high.
Junior Aleeza Yu captured vault with a score of 9.825, as Stanford slipped into comeback mode. Bryant earned a share of second on floor (9.925) and sophomore Taylor Lawson (9.900) placed fourth to tighten the meet.

Bryant entered having won all-around titles in five consecutive meets this season. Yim had hoped to give Bryant some rest but wound up subbing her into the lineup due to the tightness of the meet. Bryant finished third in all-around at 38.825.
The meet marked the first appearance of the season by sophomore Lauren Navarro, who scored 9.725 on beam.
Stanford returns to competition on Friday at the Mardi Gras Invitational in St. Louis against LSU, Missouri and Utah. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m. PT and live scoring is available on GoStanford.com.
