BERKELEY, Calif. – After a tough opening rotation on bars, No. 25 Stanford steadied and put up a handful of season-high showings, but it wasn't enough to overtake red hot and No. 8 Cal on Sunday in the Pac-12 opener for both teams at Haas Pavilion.

Earning a season-best 49.250 on floor and 49.000 vault, the Cardinal finished with a score of 195.550. The Bears started fast and never slowed down in posting a season-best 197.325.

After hitting 23-of-24 routines in the first two meets this season, Stanford hit 22-of-24 on Sunday.

"We left a lot on the floor," head coach Tabitha Yim said. "Nerves came out in the first event, but we responded well on vault and floor."

The Cardinal received season-highs from Grace Waguespack on bars (9.775), Kyla Bryant (9.925) and Madi Brunette (9.875) on floor, and Lauren Navarro (9.825), Taylor Lawson (9.775) and Wesley Stephenson (9.775) on beam. Bryant placed second and Brunette tied for fourth on floor, while Brunette and Chloe Widner shared second on vault at 9.825.

Bryant fell on the team's final routine of the meet during her difficult beam dismount.

"Glad she is okay after an uncharacteristic slip," said Yim. "We now have a few meets under our belt and want to bring out higher quality performances."

Stanford competed without junior all-around standout Rachael Flam, who is sidelined for the season due to injury.

After three consecutive away meets, the Cardinal begins its home campaign on Jan. 27 against UCLA at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Last year's meet against the Bruins attracted a program-record crowd of more than 6,000 spectators. Live scoring can be found at GoStanford.com.
