LOS ANGELES - Stanford earned a massive 23-17 victory over No. 13 USC on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the season series against the Trojans. The 23 goals scored by the Cardinal were the most USC has conceded in program history, and the most goals Stanford has scored in a single game since the 2015 season.
Stanford improves to 9-6 on the season, including 7-2 in conference contests. USC falls to 9-3 and 5-2 in Pac-12 play.
The high scoring affair started early, as 10 total goals were tallied in the first period, with USC jumping out to a two-goal lead at 6-4. Ashley Humphrey and Annabel Frist each opened their scoring logs in the first period, tallying two goals each.
In the second quarter, Stanford piled on 8 goals to take the lead and the Cardinal never looked back. Sophia Brindisi scored her first career strike, bagging a free position goal in the second quarter as part of Stanford's 7-1 run to close out the first half.
Ali Baiocco scored eight times in LA, tying her own Stanford record for goals in a game, with three of her strikes coming from free position attempts. Her eight goals also tied the mark for goals scored against USC by a single player in a game.
The Stanford offense was even more effective in the third quarter, adding nine more strikes to the total. The Cardinal took a big advantage into the final frame, leading 21-14.
Ashley Humphrey chipped in four goals and seven assists for 11 points to lead the team. Her assist total was the second-most in a game for the Cardinal, just one behind her own Stanford record of eight assists that she set earlier this season.
Annabel Frist added four of her own goals in the game, making it three different players recording a hat trick in Los Angeles. Eight total Stanford athletes tallied a goal against USC.
The Cardinal closed out the game with two more goals in the fourth quarter coming from Baiocco. Stanford finished just two goals shy of the 25 goal program record set in 2015 against California.
Galen Lew led the team in draw controls, snagging eight on the day, pushing her weekend total to an impressive 18. Ailish Kelly and Mackenzie Chapman each pitched in three draw controls as well.
Defensively, Kara Rahaim led from the back in the goal, making seven saves against the Trojans. Jay Browne corralled three ground balls to pace the team, with 11 total players pitching in a ground ball in the game. Browne also chipped in a goal and two assists.
Stanford has next weekend off before wrapping up the regular season against California on April 23.
