Year in Review: Lightweight Rowing

STANFORD, Calif. – After recent seasons filled with adversity, the Cardinal lightweight program started to regain its footing as one of the best programs in the country throughout the 2022 season.

Continuing the Streak
No. 2 Stanford concluded its 2022 campaign, finishing tied for fourth in the chase for the IRA Commissioner's Cup. The Cardinal's efforts were led by a third-place finish for Stanford in the varsity 8+ and a fifth-place result for the Cardinal in the varsity 4+ race.

The Cardinal's doubles boat opened racing with a second-place finish in the varsity 2x petite final. Stanford then raced in the varsity 4+ grand final, finishing fifth and topping Wisconsin and Georgetown. The Cardinal finished its time at the IRA Championships with a third-place finish in the varsity eight race, bringing home a bronze medal to The Farm.

Stanford has now brought home at least one podium finish in each of its trips to the sport's national championship dating back to 2014.

The Path to IRAs
Alongside its podium effort at the IRA Championships, Stanford's 2022 season was highlighted by a first-place finish at The Knecht Cup, April 10, a fifth-place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic March 26-27, and intense racing in dual matchups at Redwood Shores with eventual 2022 IRA Champion and No. 1 Princeton as well as No. 6 Wisconsin April 16 and April 23.

Louis and Yates Named to Pocock Racing Shells All-America Team
Sophomore Avery Louis and senior Martha Yates were named 2022 Pocock All-America Athletes, the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced in late July.

The pair each rowed in Stanford's varsity eight throughout the season, helping to guide the Cardinal's boat to a bronze-medal finish and the team to a tied-for-fourth place effort at the IRA Championships in May.

Keaty Named CRCA Lightweight Coach of the Year
Stanford lightweight head coach Madison Keaty was named the College Rowing Coaches Association's lightweight rowing coach of the year, announced by the organization in July.

In her first year at the helm of the program, Keaty led the Cardinal to a tied-for-fourth-place finish at the 2022 IRA Championships. The Cardinal's efforts were led by a third-place finish for Stanford in the varsity 8+ and a fifth-place result for the Cardinal in the varsity 4+ race.

Under her leadership, Cardinal student-athletes also excelled off the water, earning a combined 23 academic honors from both the IRA and CRCA.
