SARASOTA, Fla. – Stanford completed action Saturday in the two-day season-opening IRA Sarasota Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.
The No. 8 Cardinal, with nine freshmen on the first and second varsity eights, placed sixth among a field of top-10 teams. Stanford raced No. 3 Washington, No. 4 Yale, No. 5 Harvard, No. 6 Northeastern, and No. 7 Brown in each race. The teams competed for the Benderson Cup.
"We brought a young team to race a collection of the best programs in the country to start our 2024 season," said Ted Sobolewski, Stanford's Farwell Family Director of Men's Rowing. "We are disappointed that we weren't up to the standard of our competition this weekend, be we gained valuable perspective on racing that will help us improve over the remainder of our season.
"We know we have a lot of work ahead of us on many fronts, but we believe in the team that we're building. Experiencing racing like we did this weekend is a necessary step in achieving the long-term goals we have for the program. We have significant room for growth between now and the IRA National Championship."
