CHAPEL HILL, N.C – Stanford fencing wrapped up day one of the ACC Championships this afternoon, with the No. 11 men’s team tying for third in the conference’s team competition. The No. 14 women’s team saw individual competition today, highlighted by sophomore Ellen Wang finishing fourth in foil.
The women’s team posted five top-10 finishes, led by Wang’s top-four finish.
Wang advanced to the foil semifinal after going 3-1 in pool play and winning 15-14 in the round of eight. Wang fell 15-9 in the semi to the top-seeded Rebeca Candescu.
In the third-place bout, Wang fell 15-5 to finish fourth in the conference.
Sofia Raso joined Wang in the women’s foil quarterfinal with a 4-2 run in pool play, falling 15-8 to the No. 2 seeded Josephina Conway. Jeanette Han went 3-2 in pool play to advance to the saber quarterfinal, pushing the number one seed but falling 15-12.
In the afternoon, the Cardinal men’s team went 1-3, with a 14-13 win over No. 8 Duke, to finish Xth in the conference. Epee led the way for Stanford in the win, taking the 6-3 win as Orion Singha, Alexander Jeon and Kai Rayle each went 2-1. Singha, a freshman, finished the day 7-5 in individual bouts.
Fellow freshman Renzo Fukuda and graduate student Benjamin Shih each went 8-4 in men’s foil to pace the Cardinal.
The Cardinal is back tomorrow for day two of the ACC Championships, with the men’s individual competition starting at 5:00 a.m. PT and the women’s team competition getting underway at 10:30 a.m. PT.
