Women's Track and Field: Season in Review

A summary of highlights from the 2025 indoor and outdoor seasons

ON JUNE 14, 2025, the final day of Stanford’s 2024-25 athletics year, the Cardinal women put down a performance to remember to close out the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Moments after junior Alyssa Jones broke the Stanford outdoor high-jump record, classmate Roisin Willis ran down the field to win the fastest 800-meter race in collegiate history, with an unprecedented five women breaking two minutes.

Not long after Willis broke the meet and Atlantic Coast Conference records with her time of 1:58.13, sophomore Sophia Kennedy unleashed a lethal kick of her own, passing six on the final lap of the 5,000 to place third.

It was Stanford’s highest finish in 11 years and Kennedy was the highest American finisher. Also of note, Kennedy and teammate Zofia Dudek increased a Stanford streak of NCAA finalists at 5,000 to 15 seasons.

Led by Jones, who also was second in the long jump, Stanford placed sixth as a team, the highest from the ACC, and Stanford’s best women’s place at this meet in seven years.

Willis earned her third career NCAA title and first outdoors. Her NCAA title total ties her with triple jumper Erica McLain for second all-time among Stanford women behind only distance runner Lauren Fleshman (five from 2000-03).

Willis provided a bookend to Stanford’s back-to-back titles in the 800, following Juliette Whittaker’s triumph on the same track in 2024. This was the fourth time in NCAA history that a school won consecutive titles in that event with different runners.

Accolades for Willis included West Region Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, beating out three other NCAA champions for the honor, and was named semifinalist for The Bowerman award, track and field’s Heisman.

Her 1:58.13 was the third-fastest in collegiate history. Only Texas A&M’s Athing Mu (1:57.73 in 2021), the Tokyo Olympic champion, and LSU’s Michaela Rose (1:58.12 in 2025), who was fourth in the NCAA final, have run faster in collegiate competition.

In the first year in the ACC, Stanford women broke four conference records – Jones in outdoor long jump (22-4 1/2, 6.81), Willis in the outdoor 800, and Amy Bunnage in the indoor 5,000 (15:00.75), which also was an ACC absolute record. Stanford’s foursome of Whittaker, Cate Peters, Willis, and Bunnage broke the indoor record for the distance medley relay (10:38.93), though it was run on an oversized track. Also, Kennedy broke the ACC indoor meet record in the 3,000 (8:47.38).

Stanford women won five ACC indoor titles while placing second as a team. Jones won both the high jump and long jump while earning ACC Indoor Women’s Field Most Valuable Performer honors. Zofia Dudek won the 5,000 for the Stanford program’s first ACC individual championship, including cross country.

Stanford’s accumulation of NCAA team finishes – sixth in cross country, 13th in indoor track and field, and sixth outdoors – placed the Cardinal women at No. 3 in the USTFCCCA’s Program of the Year standings.
