Stanford Routs Hornets In Season Opener

    

No. 13 Stanford delivered an emphatic victory to open the 2025 campaign, downing Sacramento State in a 5-1 rout on Thursday afternoon. 

The Cardinal (1-0-0) scored its most goals in a season opener since 2019, when it blanked Penn State 5-0. The victory marked Stanford's fourth consecutive win in a regular-season opener.

“What an emphatic victory and a great way to start the season,” head coach Jeremy Gunn said. “You work so hard in the preseason leading up to this moment, and I thought we gave a great account of ourselves today. It was exciting to watch.”

No. 13 Stanford earned a statement win at Cagan Stadium on Sunday night, tallying a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Denver in the early-season heavyweight bout. 

The win marks the third consecutive season that Stanford has defeated a top-five opponent, as the Cardinal improves to 2-0-0 on the young season. Denver falls to 1-1-0 following the loss.

"Everyone watching must have had an incredible time because tonight was just a fantastic game of soccer," said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer. "I was so impressed with how well we played. We were so dominant against a very, very good team. It's a great game that can go either way, but I really felt that we were deserving in the game."

Stanford Beats In-State Foe San Diego State

    

Hosting San Diego State on Thursday night from Cagan Stadium, No. 2 Stanford scored a trio of goals in the first 18 minutes of the match to coast to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Aztecs.

The Cardinal improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while San Diego State dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

Senior Allie Montoya continued her torrid start to the season, notching a goal for the third consecutive contest to cap the scoring in the 18th minute.

All three goalkeepers got minutes in the victory for the Cardinal, with freshman Caroline Birkel working the first 45 minutes of the clean sheet while making one save. Sophomore Kaiya Jota started the second half before being replaced by junior Alyssa Savig for the final 14 minutes that included one save.

Stanford Takes Down Saint Mary's 4-1

    

Junior Joelle Jung scored a goal and added two assists to guide No. 2 Stanford to a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary’s on Sunday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.

With the victory, Stanford improved to 4-0 while the Gaels dropped to 0-1-1 on the season.

Stanford will conclude a five-match homestand on Thursday when it welcomes Arizona to Cagan Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Volleyball Wins Season Opener

    

Senior Elia Rubin turned in a double-double to lead No. 6 Stanford in a 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 season-opening win over No. 16 Florida, Friday, in the AVCA First Serve Showcase at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Stanford (1-0) out hit Florida (0-1) .260 to .203. The Cardinal locked in defensively, racking up 57 digs to go with 13.0 blocks.

Stanford’s lone returning All-American, Rubin registered 14 kills on .343 hitting and a match-high 17 digs to lead the Cardinal. The outside hitter also tallied two blocks and two assists. Opposite Jordyn Harvey added 11 kills and four blocks, including two solo.

Stanford led all schools with 790 student-athletes to the 2024-25 ACC Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the conference on Friday.

In its first year of ACC competition, Stanford’s 790 selections outdistanced the field, including 668 from runner-up Duke, which had been the Honor Roll conference leader for 36 of the 38 years.

The ACC Academic Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes who participated in a varsity sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. A league record 7,945 student-athletes were recognized in 2024-25, marking the sixth consecutive year in which at least 5,500 ACC student-athletes achieved Honor Roll status.

Stanford cross country returns to the starting line this fall, as the fall 2025 schedule was unveiled on Friday. 

The Cardinal, who begin the campaign with its annual return to Golden Gate Park to end the month of August, will participate in five regular season meets in 2025, culminating in a return to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Louisville, Ky. on October 31. 

Stanford looks to repeat its success early in the season as the Stanford women’s team looks to repeat as champions at the USF Invitational while both squads look to repeat as team champions at Missouri’s Gans Creek Classic (Sept. 26).

Örtengren Claims First LET Title

    

The best summer in Stanford women’s golf history continued with Meja Örtengren taking home the title at the Ladies European Tour Hills Open on Sunday. 

She finished below par in all three rounds. She finished Saturday’s round tied for the lead at 5-under and won the tournament outright after shooting a 1-under 70 in the final round on Sunday afternoon.

Örtengren was able to secure the top spot after getting past some of the best international competitors. She won over countrywoman Lisa Pettersson and Germany's Leonie Harm by two shots. She also topped past Annika Award winner and Swede Ingrid Lindblad.
