LAST TIME OUT

  • In a battle of top-five teams, No. 3 Stanford came out victorious with a 2-1 win over No. 1 Virginia on Sunday from a sold-out Cagan Stadium
  • The ranked-victory was the third of the season for Stanford after previously defeating No. 16 Santa Clara and No. 6 USC
  • Sunday’s win was also the first over a top-five opponent since defeating No. 2 North Carolina on October 13, 2024, and the first over a top-ranked foe since knocking off No. 1 UCLA on October 14, 2022
  • Senior Jasmine Aikey got the scoring started with a spectacular bicycle-kick goal in the 27th minute ... Mia Bhuta delivered the ball in on a corner kick before a header from Lizzie Boamah was blocked and sent looping back toward the top of the box ... turning her back to goal, Aikey raised her right foot and cycled her shot toward the back post for her team-leading 11th goal of the year
  • Sophomore Charlotte Kohler turned in what proved to be the game-winner in the 37th minute as she took a shot that was stopped by a defender on the goal line for a team save ... staying on the attack, Boamah ran down the rebound and sent in a left-footed cross where Kohler rose above her defender and headed her shot past Virginia goalkeeper Victoria Safradin for her fifth goal of the season
  • Virginia did manage to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 72nd minute as Jill Flammia unleashed a rocket of a right-footed shot from the top of the box for the goal
  • Despite trailing in both shots (13-12) and corner kicks (8-6), Stanford managed the victory in large part due to stellar goalkeeping from freshman Caroline Birkel ... Birkel was credited with three saves in the win, including a brilliant diving effort to keep the match scoreless in the 12th minute

AIKEY NAMED ACC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • Having led Stanford to a 2-0 week that included a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Virginia, Jasmine Aikey was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week on October 14
  • The conference weekly honor was the fourth in Aikey's career, including her second as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference ... she had previously been named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week once during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before earning ACC Defensive Player of the Week on September 17, 2024
  • Aikey scored a goal in each of Stanford’s two victories, including tallying the Cardinal’s first goal of the second half in a 5-0 win over Virginia Tech on October 9
  • She went on to score the match’s opening goal in the 27th minute to give Stanford an early 1-0 lead over the top-ranked Cavaliers on October 12
  • Cal's Teagan Wy was named Defensive Player of the Week

SPREADING THE WEALTH

  • Twelve different players have scored goals this season, and five more have contributed an assist, as 17 players have factored into points

FRESHMEN READY TO PLAY

  • Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Birkel has started every match of her inaugural campaign on The Farm, while Lily Freer has started all but one while logging 987 minutes - including the full 90 in eight of the first 13
  • Fellow freshmen Brooke Holden and Y-Lan Nguyen have also played in all 13 matches this season

  • Junior Mia Bhuta was among the 43 players named to the 2025 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the start of the season
  • Seniors Jasmine Aikey and Elise Evans were listed on the updated midseason watch list announced on October 7
  • The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches
  • The award is named in honor of the late Robert Hermann, the legendary St. Louis, Mo., businessman and soccer executive who founded the National Professional Soccer League, the first pro soccer league in the United States which became the North American Soccer League. He was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012 ... Hermann was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012
  • A Cardinal player has claimed three of the last eight MAC Hermann trophies, with Andi Sullivan earning the award in 2017, followed by Catarina Macario becoming a back-to-back winner in 2018 and 2019 ... Kelley O'Hara was the first Stanford player to win the MAC Hermann Trophy at the conclusion of the 2009 season ... THEY HAVE THE ANSWER

  • The Cardinal has allowed just eight goals this year, but when it has conceded, it has often been quick to respond with a counterpunch
  • Stanford allowed its first goal of the season to then-No. 16 Santa Clara on August 17 with the clock reading 88:51, but freshman Milly Bray got that goal back for the Cardinal just 24 second later
  • Saint Mary's scored in the 52nd minute on August 24, but Jasmine Aikey and Stanford responded for a goal in the 55th to regain all the momentum
  • After USC's Jaiden Anderson netted a goal in the final ticks of the 80th minute on September 4, Eleanor Klinger completed a brace with a goal in the 83rd

KITAHATA HONORED WITH CALHOPE COURAGE AWARD

  • Stanford women’s soccer forward Andrea Kitahata was selected as a September 2025 recipient of the CalHOPE Courage Award
  • Presented monthly since February 2022, the CalHOPE Courage Award honors student-athletes at California colleges and universities who have overcome stress, anxiety, and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity
  • Andrea was selected for her vulnerability, resilience, and leadership in her mental health journey while excelling at the highest levels of collegiate soccer following the tragic passing of her friend and teammate Katie Meyer

  • Eleanor Klinger's goal just 39 seconds into the match at Pitt on September 14 is the quickest tally for the Cardinal this year, and the fastest for a Cardinal player since Christen Press scored in 23 seconds against BYU on November 14, 2009

  • Defending national champion North Carolina was selected as the preseason favorite with 10 first-place votes and 246 overall points ... Notre Dame garnered two first-place votes and 229 points to edge Florida State (225 points) for second in the poll ... the Seminoles, which defeated Stanford in the 2023 College Cup final, earned four first-place votes while placing third ... Duke was picked fourth with 208 points, followed by the Cardinal with 201 points ... Virginia, which was selected seventh behind Wake Forest in the poll, garnered the final first-place vote

CARDINAL ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

  • Tierna Davidson, Naomi Girma and Sophia Smith won gold playing with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics
  • While 2024 marked the first Olympic gold for the trio, the Olympic medal was the second of Davidson’s career after helping the U.S. to a bronze at the Tokyo Games in 2020

  • One of the top defenders in the world, Girma played every minute of the Olympics for the United States at center back, helping the U.S. post four clean sheets in the six matches
  • Proving herself a weapon on the attack for the United States, Smith scored three goals and added two assists ... she was directly involved in a goal in four of the USA’s six matches at the 2024 Olympics
  • Davidson missed the group stage final and the quarterfinal match in Olympic play, but returned to the starting lineup and the U.S. backline for the semifinal and gold-medal matches – a pair of 1-0 victories over Germany and Brazil
  • With three more added to the list, Stanford women’s soccer has now had seven former players win gold with the U.S. in Olympic competition – compiling 10 gold medals in total
