Third at MPSF Championship

All three Stanford boats take third on Lake Natoma

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Stanford varsity eight placed third in its second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Rowing Championship on Sunday on Lake Natoma.

The placing extended a streak of third-place finishes in a conference 1V8+ Grand Final to 12 consecutive seasons. Stanford also placed third in the second and third varsity eight Grand Finals.

Racing in strong wins that moved up the start of the day’s action by an hour, the Stanford 1V8+ clocked 5:47.427 over the 2,000-meter course at Lake Natoma, which is a dammed section of the American River, and home of the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, where the course is based. The Cardinal 2V8+ was timed in 5:52.411 and the 3V8+ was 6:06.252.

In the 1V8+ on Sunday, the Cardinal trailed first-place Washington by 6.951 seconds and California by 4.964. In the 2V8+, the deficit was 6.995 to first-place Washington and 5.099 to Cal, and in the 3V8+ it was 16.674 to first-place Cal and 16.314 to Washington. Stanford is racing a third varsity boat this season for the first time since 2019.

Last season, Stanford trailing first-place Cal by 6.72 seconds and Washington by 5.48 in the 1V8+, and in the 2V8+, the deficit was 9.02 to first-place Washington and 8.29 to Cal.

The MPSF consists of six programs, including four from the former Pac-12 Conference – current No. 5 Stanford, No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, and Oregon State. Also competing are the University of British Columbia and UC San Diego. Washington is the two-time defending IRA national champion.

The IRA Championships are May 29-31 again on Lake Natoma.
