Cal Tops Card in Big Row

Bears gets the best of Stanford in 92nd renewal of Big Row rivalry

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – In the 92nd renewal of the Big Row between Stanford and California, it was the Bears with a trio of victories on Saturday.

On an overcast morning on the Belmont Channel/Redwood Shores Lagoon course that doubles as the home venue for both teams, No. 2 Cal was able to win the first, second and third varsity eights over the No. 5 Cardinal. Cal retains possession of the Schwabacher Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the 1V8+ race.

Last season, racing just first and second varsity eights, Stanford’s trailing margins were more than nine seconds in each race, but on Saturday the Cardinal trimmed those both to three seconds. Cal won the 1V8 5:49.8 to 5:52.6 and the 2V8 5:55.7 to 5:58.8.

The regular season comes to a close with the Stanford 1V8+ and 2V8+ boats finishing with 6-4 records in duals and the 3V8+ at 4-4.

Stanford next competes at its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, on May 17 on Lake Natoma in Gold River.

The IRA Championships are May 29-31 also in Gold River.
