Lights Reach All Three Grand Finals

Stanford rowed to second place in its heat in the 8+

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Stanford lightweight rowing notched a productive opening day at the IRA National Championship regatta, with all three boats earning appearances in Sunday’s grand finals.

The morning began with the 2x, with Stanford making up a 1.6 second deficit over the last 1,000 meters to qualify for the grand final. Stanford’s third split, between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, was the second-fastest in the heat, allowing Stanford to make up the ground and advance in the regatta with a third-place finish.

Stanford’s varsity four advanced to the grand final with a third-place result, besting Georgetown by 3.6 seconds. The Cardinal trailed after 500 meters but quickly recovered to move into third place, where it remained for the rest of the race.

The best result of the opening day of heats came in the varsity eight, where Stanford placed second with a time of 6:50.83. Stanford pulled away from Georgetown over the final 1,000 meters, eventually taking second place by 3.6 seconds.

Stanford will participate in all three grand finals on Sunday, May 31. The 2x will race at 8:08 a.m., the 4+ at 8:32 a.m. and the 8+ at 10:38 a.m.
