A legendary scholastic head coach spanning more than four decades, Orlich is in his sixth season with the Stanford men's basketball program.
As the Assistant to the Head Coach, Orlich manages several areas within Stanford’s men’s basketball program and works closely with external departments campus-wide and in the community to enhance the student-athlete’s welfare.
Orlich guided the boy’s basketball programs at South Tahoe High School (1975-2000) and Clovis West High School (2002-2016), before announcing his retirement from coaching in 2016. With a career coaching record of 832-283, Orlich is the third-winningest high school coach all-time in the state of California.
Orlich served as the head coach at South Tahoe for 25 years, leading the Vikings to a stellar 521-184 record, nine regional titles and two Nevada state championships (1987, 1992). Orlich received one of the highest honors when he was named the CIF Coach of the Year in in 1992, even though the South Tahoe-based high school is not a member of the CIF. Orlich was also honored as the 1992 Nevada High School Coach of the Year.
Orlich coached Jerod Haase at South Tahoe from 1989-92, where Haase was the Nevada AAA Player of the Year in leading the Vikings to a state championship as a senior in 1992.
Following his standout career at South Tahoe, Orlich was hired as the head coach at Clovis West for the 2002-03 season. Over a standout 14-year tenure at Clovis West, he guided the Golden Eagles to a 311-99 record, which included eight conference titles, eight sectional final appearances and the CIF Southern California Regional Championship in 2006.
Orlich also served as head coach of the West Team in the 1989 McDonald’s High School All-American Game. A game that featured Co-MVP’s Shaquille O’Neal (West) and current Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley (East), was won by Orlich’s West squad, 112-103.
Orlich and his wife, Kelly, have been married for 30 years. The couple has four children: Ashley, Brianna, Alexandria and Michael, along with a golden retriever, Rebound.
