Mike Johnson joined the Stanford staff as an assistant coach in January 2022. He enters his second season with the program in 2023.
In his first season on The Farm, Johnson helped lead Stanford to its 20th Pac-12 title and 23rd conference crown overall. Advancing to its 16th NCAA regional final, Stanford produced three AVCA All-Americans, the Pac-12 Player of the Year (Kendall Kipp), Setter of the Year (Kami Miner), Libero of the Year (Elena Oglivie), and two College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-Americans.
Johnson spent the previous four seasons at the helm of the program at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2020), including its first NCAA postseason win since 2005.
Johnson has 10 years of experience as a head coach, including stints at Xavier (2010-14) and Austin Peay (2009). He amassed a career record of 187-105 as a head coach.
Johnson produced three consecutive runner-up finishes in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship, marking a first for Xavier. His Musketeer squads produced seven AVCA honorable mention All-Americans. In Johnson's one year as head coach at Austin Peay his squad recorded a 22-9 overall mark and was 15-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference - its best league standing in 17 years.
Johnson served as the associate head coach at Notre Dame during the 2015-17 campaigns. He has also spent time as an assistant and an associate head coach at Cal Poly (2006-08) and an assistant at the University of Washington (2004).
A native of Kahaluu, Hawaii, Johnson graduated from Washington in 2003 with a degree in chemical engineering. He is married to the former Liz Grajewski, an All-Big Ten gymnast at Iowa. They have three daughters, Jamie, Harper and Nell, along with a son, Noah.
