Cardinal Wins Two

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Stanford men’s rowing team earned two victories at the Head of the American on Lake Natoma Saturday.

"Today we revealed that our depth is solid," said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "The teamwork and energy of the group was on display today on Lake Natoma. The freshmen and the varsity group competed at the highest level to bring home two gold medals."

The Cardinal rowers took home the title in the Men’s Open 4+ as well as the Men’s Novice 8+ events. In fact Stanford claimed the top two finishes in the Men’s Open 4+ as the B boat won the race and the A boat came in second. The Cardinal had the top two boats out of the 16 in the field.

The members of the winning boat in the open 4+ race were Nicolas Cserepy, Ben Chuter, Andrew Terajewicz and Robbie Ostrow. They completed the race in 17:49.50, nearly 30 seconds ahead of their teammates who clocked an 18:14.20.

A group of freshmen powered their way to a victory in their collegiate debut, besting second place Cal Maritime by over one minute with their 17:06.2. The only member of the Novice Eight with collegiate experience was Ryan Hails, who was a member of the third place boat in the Men’s Championship Four at Head of the Charles last weekend.

""We're very pleased with how the guys performed today," said assistant coach Jake Cornelius. "For most novices this was their first race in a Stanford uniform, and it's great to get a win. This sets us up well for a strong winter of training."

The freshmen making their collegiate debut were Max Freundlich, Brendan Larkin, Karl Wessendorf, Abdulla Janahi, Charlie Walker, Taylor O’Brien and Erik Holmvik.

Stanford finished the day with one boat entered in the Men’s Open 2x. Wessendorf and Kendall Fagan teamed up for a fourth place finish in a time of 20:50.7.

Next up for the Cardinal will be the Rowing Safari next weekend, Nov. 3-4 at Lake Mendocino.
