CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Led by redshirt sophomore Maxwell Hvolbek, the Stanford wrestling team finished 19th with 32.0 team points at the 2015 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle, Friday, in McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Hvolbek placed eighth at 157 pounds, finishing 3-3 in the tournament. After dropping a 7-1 decision to No. 12 Russell Parsons of Army in the quarterfinals, the redshirt sophomore posted an 8-5 decision over Chris Mears of North Carolina. He then fell to Tommy Gant (unattached), 6-3, before dropping a 10-4 decision to 19th-ranked Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the seventh-place match. Hvolbek is now 14-9 overall on the year.
True freshman Isaiah Locsin (141 pounds) and redshirt sophomore Jim Wilson (165 pounds) also dropped quarterfinals matches on Friday. Locsin was edged 3-2 by 10th-ranked Zachary Horan of Central Michigan, while Wilson fell to No. 15 Peyton Walsh of Navy, 5-4.
Redshirt freshman Keaton Subjeck went 2-1 on the afternoon at 174 pounds, opening with a 7-3 decision over Brett Stein of Gardner Webb. He then secured a fall in 6:20 over Chattanooga’s Levi Clemons before being eliminated from the tournament by Oklahoma State’s Jordan Rogers, 10-3. Subjeck is 13-6 overall on the season.
Redshirt freshman heavyweight Nathan Butler went 2-1 on Friday, finishing the tournament 4-2 overall. He posted an 8-4 decision, which went to a second tiebreaker, over Lehigh’s Doug Vollaro. He then edged 16th-ranked Tanner Harms of Wyoming, 3-2, before dropping a 3-1 sudden victory decision to No. 19 Riley Shaw of Cleveland State.
Redshirt sophomore 184-pounders Ryan Davies and Zach Nevills both finished 1-1 on the day and 3-2 in the tournament.
Penn State won the team title with 165.0 points. Missouri (150.0) came in second, while Oklahoma State (135.5) finished third.
Up next, Stanford travels to Corvallis, Ore., for a Pac-12 dual against Oregon State on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. PT. The action will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
