Boston Split

BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 1 Stanford lightweight rowing team took on No. 4 Boston University and the two teams split races on Saturday.

It was the first racing in three weeks for Stanford, who has only competed one weekend this spring when the varsity eight won the Grand Final of the San Diego Crew Classic on March 29. The varsity eight won by five seconds against BU to give it wins in all three of its races this season. The Terriers claimed a 10-second victory in the 2V8 race.

“We had a slightly rough start,” said Blaire Hunter, a freshman from Massachusetts. “We recovered quickly and were able to keep our focus together throughout the race.”

Stanford never trailed by more than a few seats despite the slow start. The Cardinal was able to gain ground bit by bit and finished strong with a time of 6:54.0. BU crossed the line in 6:59.0.

The conditions can tend to be pretty rough on the Charles River, but the water was great for the crews competing on the basin this particular Saturday.

Hunter, who has spent a lot of time rowing on the Charles River while attending Buckingham Browne & Nichols for high school, is enjoying being back home for the second time in her young Stanford career. She also raced with the varsity eight at the Head of the Charles last fall.

“It is awesome to be back,” said Hunter. “Boston is a very crew-orientated city. There were so many boats out on the water today and it was fun to feel that camaraderie with other rowers on the river.”

The 2V8 also raced against BU in a dual this morning. The Terriers posted a strong race against the Cardinal and finished with a time of 7:09.0. Stanford clocked a 7:19.0.

Stanford will be back out on the Charles River on Sunday to race some of the top teams in the country. Starting at 7 a.m. the Cardinal will be in the Lightweight Invite with No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe, No. 4 Boston University, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 9 MIT.
