AT TWO INDOOR track and field meets, 1,180 miles apart, Stanford produced some of the greatest performances in school history on Friday.
At the Albuquerque (N.M.) Convention Center, Max McKhann broke a Stanford record that stood for 23 years. McKhann won the 35-pound weight throw at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in 71-10 ¾ (21.91 meters), breaking the mark of 71-7 ¼ (21.82m) held by Adam Connolly since 1999.
And at the 307-meter flat Dempsey Indoor track in Seattle, Ky Robinson won the 5,000 at the Husky Classic in 13:21.85, shattering the facility and meet records while running the 10th-fastest indoor 5,000 time in collegiate history on any-sized track. The facility record was 13:28.00 by BYU's Connor Mantz in 2021 and the meet record was 13:29.94 by Chris Thompson of the Oregon Track Club in 2012.
With Cole Sprout in third in 13:24.38 and Charles Hicks seventh in 13:37.08, Robinson and teammates completely rearranged the Stanford indoor top-five in that event, with Robinson No. 2, Sprout No. 3 and Hicks No. 5 all-time. Robinson was just short of Chris Derrick's indoor school record of 13:19.58 from 2012. Derrick's time is No. 7 on the all-time collegiate indoor list.

On Stanford's absolute list (including indoor and outdoor), Robinson is No. 4, behind Ian Dobson (13:15.33, 2005), Ryan Hall (13:16.03, 2005), and Derrick.
Stanford is so deep in the 5,000 that 11 on the current roster have broken 14 minutes, including seven at 13:45 or under.
Robinson, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, came in with a 5,000 best of 13:51.53. But Robinson's best event is the steeplechase, placing sixth at the 2021 NCAA Championships in school-record time. His best of 8:32.01 broke the Aussie and Oceania under-20 records.
Sprout, a sophomore, improved upon his best time, from the outdoor season, by 19 seconds.
In Albuquerque, there were two other top-five additions. In the pole vault, Max Manson set a personal best of 17-7 ¾ (5.38m) to finish as the top collegian and fourth overall. He jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 on the Stanford indoor list.
And in the long jump, Allan Hunter, another sophomore, reached 24-5 (7.44m) to place fourth. He also moved up from No. 8 to No. 5 on the Stanford indoor list.
McKhann had three throws that would have won the competition – all over 71 feet. McKhann earned a personal best of 71-5 ½ (21.78) on his second throw and beat it on his fifth. He has earned personal bests in all three meets this season after coming into 2022 with a best of 65-10 1/4 (20.07m).
Both meets continue Saturday.
