FEDERAL WAY, Wash. & TUCSON, Ariz. – Stanford women's swimming swept both of Wednesday's relays to give the Cardinal the advantage on the team leaderboard after the first day of the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
With 216 points through three events the Cardinal sit at the top of the team leaderboard by five points over No. 10 USC. Arizona is third with 158 points.
Stanford – led by a team of four Olympians with nine Olympic medals between them – cruised to the nation's fastest time in the 800 free relay to win its first Pac-12 title in the event since 2017. The quartet of Torri Huske, Taylor Ruck, Regan Smith and
Brooke Forde went 6:50.21 – an improvement of nearly seven seconds from November, and the nation's fastest time by nearly three seconds.
In a display of the program's depth, the Cardinal's B team of freshmen Amy Tang, Aurora Roghair, Lillie Nordmann, and senior Lucie Nordmann went 7:01.05 – a mark which would have placed third at the meet.
Smith opened the night by swimming the opening leg of Stanford's winning 200 medley relay team. She, Allie Raab, Emma Wheal and Anya Goeders swam 1:34.68 to win the race and post the nation's seventh-fastest time in the process.
Down in Arizona at the Pac-12 Diving Championships, Daria Lenz led the Cardinal with a runner-up finish on the 1-meter. Lenz posted a score 309.10 to reach the podium. Freshman Lauren Burch reached the finals of the event, placing fifth with a score of 274.60.
Carolina Sculti won the consolation final to finish ninth (301.65).
The conference championships will continue tomorrow with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay, and the 3-meter diving event.
