STANFORD, Calif. - In its first home competition of the season, Stanford defeated the reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 96-88. The Cardinal capped off the victory on Sunday with a team event win, scoring 81.6000, topping Ohio State's score of 80.9667 in the final event.
The meet was a back and forth affair, with Ohio State jumping out to an early lead after the technical competition on Saturday. Stanford claimed five of the top 10 spots in the Figure A Elements, but the top three spots all went in favor of Ohio State.
Nicole Goot, Yara Elian, Lindi Schroeder, and Ivy Davis claimed spots four through seven in that order, while Emmannuella Tchakmakjian added a ninth place finish.
On Sunday, Ohio State held the edge in the solo competition, as Nikki Dzurko took the top spot with an 82.9333, barely beating out Lindi Schroeder for first place by 0.0333. Stanford's sophomore soloist's score of 82.9000 was good for second place in the event.
Schroeder earned an event win in the duet, however, combining with Yara Elian to win the event by more than two points. The duo's score of 82.8333 paced the field that included two Ohio State pairs, and another team of Stanford swimmers, Ivy Davis and Miko Begossi.
The trio competition was also all Cardinal, as Begossi, Davis, and Elian took the top spot with an 81.1000. Right behind them was Nicole Goot, Lindi Schroeder, and Hailee Heinrich in second place. Ohio State earned a podium spot in the event, but Stanford added a fourth place finish from Ava Jih-Schiff, Emmannuella Tchakmakjian, and Yujin Chang.
Emily Brieant, Natalie Greenfield, and Atira O'Neil also competed in the event, taking sixth overall.
In the team event, Miko Begossi, Yujin Chang, Ivy Davis, Yara Elian, Nicole Goot, Hailee Heinrich, Audrey Nguyen, and Emmannuella Tchakmakjian comprised the first-place squad. The victory in the final event cemented the overall win for the Cardinal, and capped off an exciting home opener meet for Stanford Artistic Swimming.
The Cardinal will be back in action at the Collegiate Open in Tucson, Arizona from February 17-19.
