Spokane Sports Showcase Opens in a new window UW Indoor Preview Opens in a new window

SEATTLE – Stanford sophomore Juliette Whittaker grabbed the national collegiate lead in the women's 800 meters, running 2:02.67 to win at the UW Indoor Preview track and field meet at Dempsey Indoor on Saturday.

Whittaker, the 2023 Pac-12 outdoor 800 champion and NCAA indoor runner-up, took over from the pacer with one lap of the 307-meter track to go and won by more than six seconds. The race marked her season debut.

Whittaker and fellow sophomore Roisin Willis gave Stanford its victories in Seattle. Willis, in her first race of the new season, won the 400 in 53.56 – placing her No. 5 on Stanford's all-time indoor list. Willis, the reigning NCAA indoor 800 champ, also was a member of the gold medal-winning 4x400 team at the 2022 World Under-20 Championships.

Reigning NCAA outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 champion Ky Robinson ran two races. He opened by finishing as the top collegian and placing third overall in the mile at 4:00.50. Robinson followed by placing 10th in the 1,000 in 2:25.61.

Pac-12 cross country champion Amy Bunnage, a freshman, made her collegiate track debut. She was the top collegian in the 3,000, finishing fourth overall in 9:03.21. The time made her No. 3 on Stanford's all-time freshmen list.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Stanford senior Garrett Brown excelled in an usual double at the Spokane Sports Showcase indoor meet on Friday night at The Podium. Brown won the pole vault and was fifth in the 60 hurdles.

Last year, the All-America pole vaulter tried the hurdles for the first time, competing in two meets. Taking that a step further, Brown tried the 60 hurdles for the first time and ran 8.13, placing him No. 8 on Stanford's all-time indoor list.

And he won the pole vault at 17-8 ½ (5.40 meters). Brown was locked in a dual with Montana State's Colby Wilson, the 2022 Big Sky Conference indoor champion. Though Brown had a miss at 4.90, he was perfect at 5.05, 5.20, and 5.30, which ultimately gave him the victory. Each cleared 5.40 on their second tries, before going out at 5.50. However, Wilson had misses at 5.20 and 5.30.

Though unusual, the pole vault-hurdles double is not unheard of at Stanford. U.S. decathlon champion Harrison Williams '18 excelled in the same events.

Cydney Wright set a personal best of 7.53 to place fourth in the 60. She also set a school record in the seldom-run 300, clocking 38.13. It broke the mark of 39.43 by Shataya Hendricks in 2008.

The men's 300 mark also fell, with freshman Will Floyd running 33.14 in his Stanford debut. Floyd, who was fourth, broke the mark set December 2 in Louisville, Kentucky, by fellow frosh Zachary Ryan, who ran 34.51.

Floyd and Dylan Davis were Seattle high school rivals. Now, both are Card freshman teammates, and both broke into the Stanford top-10 list in the 60. Davis ran 6.86 in the qualifying round and Floyd ran 6.88 in the prelim round. They are now No. 8 and No. 10 on the Stanford list, and Nos. 3 and 4 on the freshmen list.

Tess Stapleton, whose specialties are hurdles and long jump, made her collegiate 200 debut and was fourth in that event in a personal best 24.62.
