LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Stanford junior Alyssa Jones won both the long jump and high jump at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
Jones became the first woman to capture the high jump-long jump double at this meet since Clemson’s April Sinkler in 2009 and 2010.
In both events, Jones narrowly missed the meet record. She set a personal best in the high jump of 6-2 ¼ (1.89 meters), just a half-inch off the record by Georgia Tech’s Chaunte Howard in 2004. And in the long jump, Jones jumped 21-6 (6.55), just two inches off the ACC meet record by Maryland’s Kierra Foster in 2006.
Jones’ high jump mark strengthened her hold on No. 2 in the Stanford indoor record book. Jones also became Stanford’s first conference indoor high jump champion since Tracye Lawyer won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crown in 1997. Jones also became Stanford’s first double women’s indoor field-event champion since Arantxa King won the MPSF long and triple jumps in 2012.
Stanford had not competed in an indoor conference championship meet since 2020, but this is the most titles for the Cardinal women since winning four MPSF titles in 2018.
Jones has won every conference long jump title she’s attempted, following Pac-12 outdoor victories in 2023 and 2024.
Through the first two days of the three-day meet, the Stanford women are tied with Louisville for second with 35 points, just behind Notre Dame’s 38. The Stanford women have three individual titles so far, including Zofia Dudek’s 5,000 triumph on Saturday.
In the high jump, Jones opened with first-attempt clearances at 5-8 ½ (1.74) and 5-9 ¾ (1.77). She need three tries at 5-10 ¾ (1.80) and two at 6-0 (1.83). By then, there were three left in the field, but Jones essentially won it with a first-attempt clearance at 6-1 ¼ (1.86) while Notre Dame’s Madison Schmidt needed two tries.
Jones cleared her first attempt at the winning height of 6-2 ¼ and retired after one miss at 6-3 ¼ (1.91) to begin the long jump.
On her first long jump attempt, Jones won the competition with a jump of 21-4 ¼ (6.51). Wake Forest’s Robbie Grace had taken the lead on her first jump, of 20-9 (6.32) and that stood for second. Jones improved on her second attempt, to 21-6, for the winning distance. Jones entered the meet with the best season marks in both events.
On the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center track, Sunday mostly was a qualifying day for Monday’s finals. However, two Stanford women earned top-10 performances on their way to qualifying.
Teagan Zwaanstra sprinted to a personal best 7.31 in the 60. The top two in each heat advance automatically and she placed third in Heat 2, but she was the fastest of two to qualify on time. With a previous best of 7.36, Zwaanstra jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 on Stanford’s all-time indoor list.
Tess Stapleton, who long-jumped against her sister earlier in the day, won Heat 2 of the 60 hurdles in 8.22, tying her personal best, which also is the No. 2 time in school history. She enters the final as the No. 2 qualifier.
In the women’s 800 prelims, Stanford junior Roisin Willis was second in Heat 2 in 2:03.39 and advanced to the final with the fourth-best qualifying time. Willis was the 2023 NCAA indoor 800 champion and was the 2024 Pac-12 outdoor 800 champ.
In the men’s long jump, freshman Xavier Drumgoole jumped 23-11 ¾ (7.31) out of Flight 1 to qualify for the nine-jumper final. Drumgoole finished ninth and entered Stanford’s all-time indoor top-10 list in a tie at No. 9 with Josh Hustedt (2008).
