GOLD RIVER, Calif. – All three Stanford boats advanced to the championship semifinals of the IRA National Championship.
The Cardinal first varsity eight placed second in its first-round heat on Friday at the Lake Natoma course while the second and third varsity finished third in their heats.
On Saturday, Stanford’s eights will row out of Lane Four. Stanford’s Heat 2 of the 1V8+ is at 8:56 a.m. PT, Heat 2 of the 2V8+ is at 9:12 a.m. and Heat 1 of the 3V8+ is at 9:20 a.m.
In its 1V8+ semi, No. 5-ranked Stanford competes against No. 1 Cal, No. 3 Harvard, No. 8 Penn, No. 9 Brown and No. 11 Boston U. The top three advance to the Grand Final on Sunday – the marquee race of the three-day regatta. The other three go to the B final.
Stanford last reached the 1V8+ Grand Final in 2021. The Cardinal hasn’t made a 2V8+ Grand Final since 2012 and has never been in 3V8+ Grand Final.
Stanford’s 1V8+ finished in 5:40.96, with No. 4 Princeton winning in 5:49.36. The Cardinal finished ahead of No. 12 Syracuse in third, No. 13 Cornell in fourth, No. 21 Navy in fifth and No. 20 Gonzaga in sixth.
In Heat 1 of the 2V8+, Stanford was third in 5:53.99. The Cardinal’s 2V8+ semifinal includes Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Syracuse, and Penn.
Stanford’s 3V8+, racing at the IRA National Championship for the first time since 2019, was also third in 6:01.22. It’s semifinal includes California, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, and Boston U.
Stanford has a rich history in the IRA’s, going back to 1912. In the varsity eight, Stanford has placed among the top-six 10 times, with a best finish of second, in 1915 and 2007. The Stanford program began in 1904.
