STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford outfielder Cassandra Roulund talks what the team's trip to Seattle in the latest edition of her blog. The sophomore will be blogging all season long to give Cardinal fans a behind-the-scenes look at the team.
Aloha!
This past weekend was quite the whirlwind of a series. "Rain rain go away" was pretty much our mantra as we sat through 5+ hours of rain delays. Yes, you read that correctly... FIVE hours (at least! - I swear it felt like more) of waiting around waiting for yet another "cell to pass". Apparently the rain just shows up with little warning up there in the `Great Pacific Northwest' (as Jesse likes to call it) and stays for the entire day, and weekend.
Let me break our schedule down for you.
Friday - we warmed up and were ready to play a game only to run into a '15 minute rain delay' which soon turned into `40(ish) minutes' which developed into 2 hours and finally resulted into a rescheduled game.
Saturday - we warmed up for our scheduled doubleheader waited for another "cell to pass" with a '15 minute rain delay' and started our game. The rain didn't stop then, no, we had a lovely three hour rain delay in the middle of the 5th inning (I'll come back to this)* and then finished our first game. We waited for our second game to start but more rain delays came about and our second game was rescheduled.
Sunday - our day started bright and early as we headed to the field to play a doubleheader (again, but this time for real). We got through the entire warm-up without a drop of rain, but the dark, looming clouds were ever-present. We finally made it to the singing of the National Anthem, and I kid you not, in the middle of the National Anthem, it started to `mist'. The mist led to a drizzle and the drizzle to a '15 minute rain delay'. We made it through the rest of the two games with only one more rain delay, and the sun actually came out for the second game. (Okay, maybe it didn't actually come out but there were definitely some blue skies).
See? I told you it felt like more than 5 hours!
*Back to our 3 hour rain delay. We actually had some fun trying to entertain ourselves during this time. Coach A, Coach Henderson, KB, and I all brushed up on our lawn bowling skills with a miniature game of our own. A few of the girls watched a live stream of Stanford men's gymnastics team while others just rested. While eating, the team partook in a little game of charades! The `suggestions' were all pretty unique to our team; some gems were "Ty falling", "Boo catching", "Erin throwing", and "Nyree dancing like Beyonce". (We even kicked it up notch with throwing in some nerdy, mathematical graphs like sine, cosine, parabola, and hyperbole).
Even though McDreamy was not found (bummer), we did drive by the Space Needle (multiple times) and Erin and I got to go up it! It offered a breathtaking view of the city - I highly recommend seeing it one day! We also made a couple of stops at Starbucks because Seattle is it's birthplace - it was a must. (You'll see a photo with the Coaches and a random woman. Brandon asked her if she was a Washington `native' and if we could take a picture with a `native'.) Other than that, we spent the large majority of our time at the softball field.
So after a total time of 21.5 hours spent at the field, we finally made it home! The sun is bright and shiny and it's a lovely 85 degrees as I sit half in a fountain writing this blog. (Have I mentioned how much I love Stanford?)
Inspirational Quote of the Week: "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work." - Colin Powell (Sent to me by my lovely mother. Thanks, mom!)
Standout Teammate of the Week: Plaza! She did a great job both behind he plate and at the plate! PLA - PLA - PLA - PLAZA! She's also pretty good at charades.
Off to try and convince myself that studying is more important than fountain hopping!
