REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford had a fantastic day on the water Saturday, topping rival No. 6 California in the 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, and V4+ in the annual Big Row dual at Redwood Shores.
In the program's first race at its home course since 2019, the Cardinal excelled over nationally ranked No. 6 California. Stanford's third varsity eight boat kicked off racing strong, topping the Golden Bears by more than a three-second margin. The Cardinal's second varsity eight followed suit, besting California by the same margin. Stanford's largest margins of victory came in the varsity four (coxed) and varsity eight races, beating both of California's boats by nine seconds.
The Big Row is raced in memory of Cal 2010 alumna Jill Costello, who was a coxswain on the Golden Bears' team that battled lung cancer through the latter years of her time at Cal. She finished her degree and raced at the NCAA Championships in 2010, shortly before losing her battle with lung cancer. Both programs race in the color teal in Jill's honor.
"We are proud of the work that the team has put in so far this season and are excited about strong results against a team that is consistently a fierce competitor and ranked on the national level," noted Alben Family Associate Head Women's Rowing Coach Molly Hamrick. "The depth of our squad is encouraging and a testament to the work they have put in so far this year. We look forward to the opportunity to get back to work these next few weeks before we next meet Iowa and Southern Methodist University."
The Cardinal next takes on No. 13 SMU and T-No. 19 Iowa at Redwood Shores April 29.
