STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford women's 4x400-meter relay team ran the No. 4 time in school history on a winning effort at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
The team of Cydney Wright, Alexa Rossum, Maya Valmon, and Juliette Whittaker was clocked in a meet record of 3:31.64. It was the fastest time, indoors or outdoors by a Cardinal foursome in five years and provides promise for even faster times. For instance, freshman Roisin Willis has the fastest open 400 on the team, but did not compete this weekend.
The time was under the 3:32.67 that stood since 2016 and held by the Stanford team of Gaby Gayles, Olivia Baker, Missy Mongiovi, and Kristyn Williams.
On Saturday, the sprinters, along with thrower Max McKhann, provided the biggest highlights for Stanford as the two-day meet drew to a close. Stanford swept to men's and women's victories in the 200 and won both women's relays.
McKhann also earned a victory, in the men's hammer. McKhann had a strong series with four of his six throws over 65 meters. Any of them was enough to win.
McKhann, a two-time indoor All-American in the 35-pound weight throw, opened with a personal best 214-6 (65.38) and exceeded that on each of his next two throws, topping out at 216-11 (66.13).
The 200s were won by Udodi Onwuzurike for the men and Rossum for the women, both in wind-aided times. Onwuzurike won in 20.40 and Rossum in 23.61. Rossum won the first women's section and the second section was won by sophomore Valmon, making her outdoor season debut, in a wind-legal 23.77, which was the second-fastest time of the day behind Rossum's.
In all, Rossum was a triple winner on Saturday, also anchoring Stanford's 4x100 relay. The team of Olivia Okoli, Alyssa Jones, Wright, and Rossum) won in 44.57, tying for the 10th-fastest time in school history.
In the long relay, Wright led off with a 51.83 split, handing off in second before Rossum pushed them into the lead coming out of the three-turn stagger. Rossum had a split of 55.87, and Valmon followed in 51.81, expanding Stanford's lead. Whittaker closed with 52.14.
