THE STANFORD TRACK AND FIELD team will be split between two meets on the final weekend of full-squad indoor action before the postseason begins.
Cardinal distance runners race at the Husky Classic on University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor 307-meter flat track. Sprinters, hurdlers, and field-event athletes are at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Each meet is Friday and Saturday.
Stanford is scheduled to make its season debut in its signature indoor event – the distance medley relay – with men’s and women’s teams entered at the Husky Classic. Another intriguing entry this weekend is Sam Liokumovich, who was third in the men’s shot put at the Pac-12 Championships last year, making his season debut.
Sophomore Amy Bunnage, among the fastest in collegiate history in the 3,000 and 5,000, is entered in her first collegiate mile. This is her first race at that distance since 2019, when she ran 4:58.5. The Stanford indoor record is 4:30.92 by Juliette Whittaker last year.
Whittaker, a 2024 Olympic finalist and reigning NCAA indoor 800 champion, is scheduled to run her second 800 of the season, at the Husky Classic on Saturday. Whittaker would like to improve upon her 2:02.39 from Boston two weeks ago to have a better chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships as the holder of one of the top 16 times in the country after the conference championships.
Stanford’s top-16 individuals going into this weekend are:
Bunnage (3,000, No. 1, 8:43.82; 5,000, No. 5, 15:00.75), Alyssa Jones (high jump, No. 6, 1.86m; long jump, No. 6, 6.60m), Sophia Kennedy (3,000, No. 12, 8:54.06), 5,000, No. 12, 15:26.14), Whittaker (800, No. 8, 2:02.39; Mile, No. 15, 4:31.72), and Roisin Willis (800, No. 5, 2:01.45) for the women. And Thomas Boyden (3,000, No. 9, 7:41.85) and Cole Sprout (3,000, No. 11, 7:45.24) for the men.
