Augie Dale is in his fourth season as the Malin Burnham Assistant Sailing Coach at Stanford since joining the program in August of 2021.
Dale helped Stanford cement itself as the best women’s sailing program in the nation in 2024, completing the sweep of the ICSA Women’s Team and Fleet Race Championships, also becoming back to back champions in the Women’s Fleet. The wins marked the third and fourth national titles for Stanford in the last 12 months, and with the addition of the women's team race title, Stanford now has won at least one of each major spring sailing title.
In 2022-23, Dale helped guide Stanford to its most successful season to date. The Cardinal finished with two fleet race national titles, a singlehanded title, and three runner-up finishes in national events. Stanford was awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy, given to the best collegiate sailing program.
Dale helped lead Chapman Petersen to the first men's singlehanded national title since 2006, while also helping Hallie Schiffman to a runner-up finish on the women's side and Stanford's best finish in the event since 2018. In the spring season, Dale helped lead Stanford to its first-ever ICSA Women's Fleet Race and ICSA Open Fleet Race titles, as well as two second place finishes in the ICSA Women's Team Race and ICSA Open Fleet Race.
During his first campaign assisting the Stanford sailing teams, Dale helped lead the Cardinal to four top-five finishes in the four ICSA events in the spring of 2022. Among its four top-five finishes, Stanford took third in the Women's Fleet Race, tying the programs best-ever finish in the event from 2007.
Dale also helped guide the Stanford sailors to multiple individual honors as Six Cardinal claimed ICSA All-America honors, including Michelle Lahrkamp who became the first Stanford sailor to be named an All-American in both the coed and women's division.
Dale helped lead Jack Parkin and Wiley Rogers as well, who both joined Lahrkamp with the skippers honors while Patricia Gerli, Sammy Pickell, and AnaClare Sole took home the crew awards.
A 2019 graduate of College of Charleston, Dale was a three-year member of the sailing team after spending his freshman campaign at Old Dominion. Highly successful in college, he won the 2019 Gill Coed Fleet Race National Championship as well as the 2018 Team Race National Championship. Dale was a two-time All-American in college.
"Augie Dale is a phenomenal sailor with an impressive resume. He makes it seem easy, sailing at such a high level," noted Klevan. "The Charleston team has been immensely successful over the past half-decade and Augie has been a big part of that, especially in 2019 at the Newport Nationals."
"To me, Augie always seemed to approach his sailing with a joy unique to college sailing. He has a lot of experience and success coaching at the junior level and I expect him to bring his technical skill and a gumption to Stanford that will help us achieve our lofty goals," added Klevan. "Augie personifies what I feel is best about college sailing and I am grateful to be working with him."
